Discover spectacular scenery, beautiful autumn colours and a more relaxed way to explore New Zealand.

When summer's warmth gradually gives way to crisp mornings and golden autumn colours, New Zealand takes on a completely different kind of beauty.

From March through May, the landscapes begin to change, the busy summer holiday season winds down, and many of our favourite destinations become wonderfully peaceful.

Autumn is one of our favourite times to explore New Zealand, particularly for travellers who enjoy beautiful scenery, charming small towns, comfortable accommodation and the freedom to discover a country at their own pace. Whether you're planning a self-drive adventure or a private chauffeur-driven holiday, there are plenty of reasons to consider visiting New Zealand in autumn

Why Travel in Autumn

There are some wonderful advantages to travelling between March and May.

  • Beautiful Scenery: The South Island is particularly spectacular as the trees turn shades of gold, amber and red, with lakes and mountains providing a stunning backdrop.

  • Fewer Crowds: As the summer season winds down, many popular destinations become quieter, particularly during May.

  • Comfortable Temperatures: March often brings lovely late-summer weather, while April and May offer cooler conditions that can be ideal for sightseeing and scenic walks.

  • Beautiful Accommodation: Autumn is a wonderful time to enjoy New Zealand's boutique hotels, luxury lodges and charming country retreats.

  • More Relaxed Travel: With fewer visitors in many areas, there's often a lovely atmosphere in the small towns and villages that make New Zealand so special.

March can still be busy, particularly in the South Island, and Easter and school holidays can bring periods of higher demand. However, as autumn progresses, there are often more opportunities to explore at a leisurely pace.

Where to See the Best Autumn Colours

Arrowtown and Queenstown

If there's one place that really captures the magic of autumn in New Zealand, it's Arrowtown.

This beautiful historic gold-mining village, just a short drive from Queenstown, is famous for its spectacular autumn colours.

During April and into early May, the tree-lined streets and surrounding hills can become a wonderful patchwork of gold, orange and red. It's a lovely place to spend a few hours wandering through the village, browsing the shops or enjoying lunch at one of the local cafés.

Nearby Queenstown is equally beautiful, with colourful trees lining Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding mountains providing a magnificent backdrop.

Wānaka and Central Otago

Wānaka is another of our favourite autumn destinations.

The combination of golden trees, beautiful lake reflections and dramatic mountain scenery makes this region particularly special. A drive through the Crown Range between Queenstown and Wānaka is a wonderful experience, with plenty of opportunities to stop and admire the views.

Further afield, the historic towns of Clyde and Cromwell are lovely places to explore, with beautiful countryside, interesting local cafés and scenic cycling trails.

Christchurch and Canterbury

Christchurch is another wonderful city to visit in autumn.

The Botanic Gardens and Hagley Park are particularly beautiful as the trees change colour, making them perfect for a leisurely stroll. Heading inland, the Canterbury countryside offers charming small towns and beautiful scenic drives.

Lake Tekapo and the Mackenzie Country are spectacular throughout the year, with turquoise lakes, wide-open landscapes and magnificent views towards the Southern Alps.

Hawke's Bay and Martinborough

Autumn isn't just beautiful in the South Island.

The North Island has its own seasonal charm, particularly in regions such as Hawke's Bay and Martinborough. The countryside begins to change colour, the vineyards take on lovely autumn shades, and the region's cafés, restaurants and local produce make this a wonderful time to explore.

Hawke's Bay is also known for its Art Deco architecture, beautiful coastal scenery and excellent cycling trails.

March, April or May: Which Is the Best Month to Visit?

One of the lovely things about autumn is that each month offers something slightly different.

March: The Best of Late Summer

March is a fantastic time to visit New Zealand, particularly for those who enjoy warmer temperatures and longer daylight hours.

The weather can still feel very summery, especially in the North Island, making it an excellent time for coastal sightseeing, scenic cruises, walking and outdoor activities.

March is also a wonderful month to explore the South Island, although popular destinations such as Queenstown, Wānaka and Aoraki/Mount Cook can still be busy.

For this reason, we always recommend booking well in advance.

April: Golden Landscapes and Autumn Charm

April is particularly special in the South Island, when the autumn colours begin to reach their peak in many areas.

Arrowtown, Queenstown and Wānaka are especially beautiful, and the cooler mornings and pleasant daytime temperatures can make sightseeing and scenic drives very enjoyable.

It's a wonderful month for travellers who love photography, beautiful landscapes and exploring charming towns.

May: Peaceful, Scenic and Wonderfully Relaxed

May is often overlooked by international visitors, but we think it can be a fantastic time to explore New Zealand.

It's one of our quieter travel months, making it particularly appealing for those who prefer fewer crowds and a more leisurely holiday.

The North Island can still enjoy lovely autumn days, while the South Island offers crisp mornings, dramatic mountain scenery and sometimes the first dusting of snow on the higher peaks. Some autumn colours can linger into early May, particularly around Central Otago.

Although the days are shorter and the temperatures cooler, many of New Zealand's most memorable attractions remain open and enjoyable.

For travellers who don't mind packing a warm jacket, May can be a wonderfully rewarding time to visit.

Autumn Weather in New Zealand: What to Expect

New Zealand's weather varies considerably between the North and South Islands, and autumn is no exception.

March is generally the warmest of the three months, with pleasant daytime temperatures and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.

April brings cooler mornings and evenings, particularly in inland areas of the South Island.

By May, temperatures drop further, especially around Queenstown, Wānaka and Aoraki/Mount Cook, where frosty mornings and occasional snow on higher roads are possible.

The North Island generally remains milder, particularly around Auckland, Northland and the Bay of Plenty.

New Zealand's weather can be changeable at any time of year, so we always recommend packing layers and allowing some flexibility for weather-dependent activities.

What to Pack for an Autumn Holiday in New Zealand

Packing for autumn is all about being prepared for a variety of conditions.

We recommend bringing:

  • Lightweight clothing for warmer days

  • Warm layers, including a fleece or jumper

  • A waterproof and windproof jacket

  • Comfortable walking shoes

  • A warmer jacket for cooler South Island evenings

  • Sunglasses and sunscreen

  • A swimsuit for New Zealand's wonderful hot pools

If you're visiting during May, particularly in the South Island, a warm hat and gloves can also be useful.

Our Favourite Autumn Experiences in New Zealand

There's certainly no shortage of wonderful things to see and do between March and May.

Scenic Drives: New Zealand is famous for its spectacular driving routes, and autumn is a particularly beautiful time to explore. The Crown Range, Lindis Pass and the journey towards Aoraki/Mount Cook are among our favourites.

Milford Sound: A cruise through Milford Sound is unforgettable at any time of year, with towering mountains, waterfalls and breathtaking scenery. Autumn can bring beautiful atmospheric conditions, although Fiordland's weather is famously changeable. Read our guide to Is Milford Sound Worth Visiting?.

Scenic Train Journeys: The TranzAlpine train between Christchurch and Greymouth is one of the world's great scenic rail journeys, travelling through the magnificent Southern Alps.

Walking and Cycling: Whether you enjoy a gentle lakeside walk or a scenic e-bike ride, New Zealand offers wonderful opportunities to explore the outdoors.

Hot Pools and Relaxation: There's something particularly enjoyable about relaxing in a hot pool on a crisp autumn day. Queenstown, Lake Tekapo and Rotorua all offer lovely options.

Wildlife and Nature: From the beaches of Abel Tasman National Park to the geothermal landscapes of Rotorua, autumn is a wonderful time to discover New Zealand's diverse natural attractions.

Some activities operate seasonally or have reduced schedules as winter approaches, so it's worth planning ahead, particularly during May.

Why Autumn Is Perfect for a Self-Drive Holiday

One of the best ways to experience New Zealand is on a personalised self-drive holiday, giving you the freedom to explore at your own pace,

Our roads take you through an incredible variety of landscapes, from beautiful coastlines and rolling countryside to turquoise lakes and dramatic mountains.

Autumn is particularly rewarding because the changing colours add another dimension to the scenery.

A self-drive holiday gives you the freedom to stop whenever something catches your eye, whether that's a beautiful viewpoint, a local café or an interesting little town.

For those who would prefer not to drive, a private chauffeur-driven holiday offers the same flexibility, with the added comfort of having someone else take care of the journey.

We always recommend allowing enough time between destinations so that you can enjoy the scenery rather than spending your holiday rushing from one place to the next.

Beautiful Boutique Accommodation and Cosy Autumn Evenings

New Zealand has a wonderful selection of accommodation, from comfortable 4-star hotels and charming boutique properties to luxury lodges in spectacular locations.

After a day exploring, there's something special about returning to a beautiful hotel overlooking a lake or relaxing beside a cosy fireplace as the evening temperatures begin to cool.

As autumn progresses, accommodation availability can improve in some destinations, particularly during May, and there may be opportunities to enjoy attractive shoulder-season rates.

At Amazing New Zealand Itineraries, we carefully select accommodation to suit your preferences, whether that's beautiful boutique hotels, luxury lodges or a combination of both.

Why a Tailor-Made New Zealand Holiday Makes All the Difference

New Zealand may look relatively small on a map, but there's an incredible amount to see, and travelling between destinations can often take longer than expected.

Not sure how much time you'll need? Read our guide to How Long Should You Spend in New Zealand.

That's why we believe a well-planned itinerary makes such a difference.

Rather than rushing from one destination to the next, we recommend spending enough time in each location to really enjoy it.

Perhaps you'd like a few relaxing days beside Lake Wānaka, time exploring Queenstown and its surrounding scenery, or several nights discovering Rotorua's geothermal wonders and Māori culture.

Every traveller is different, and your holiday should reflect your own interests and preferred pace.

At Amazing New Zealand Itineraries, we specialise in creating personalised self-drive and private chauffeur-driven holidays throughout New Zealand.

We carefully plan your route, select beautiful accommodation and recommend experiences that suit your interests, while leaving you plenty of freedom to explore independently.
