Amazing New Zealand Itineraries have been helping visitors from around the world plan personalised New Zealand holidays for over 20 years. Every itinerary I create is individually designed around our clients' interests, travel style and budget, and I personally look after them from the first enquiry until they arrive home.

How much should you budget for a holiday in New Zealand?

One of the very first questions I'm asked is:

"How much does a New Zealand holiday actually cost?"

It's an excellent question, and one I completely understand. A holiday to New Zealand is a significant investment, particularly for visitors travelling from North America, Europe or the UK, and most people want to know what they should realistically expect to spend before they begin planning.

The honest answer is... it depends.

Some travellers dream of luxury lodges, scenic helicopter flights and world-class dining. Others are looking for comfortable four-star accommodation, spectacular scenery and memorable experiences without spending more than they need to.

Most of my clients fall somewhere in the middle.

After helping hundreds of travellers plan customised holidays throughout New Zealand, I've developed a good understanding of what different styles of travel typically cost. While every itinerary I create is completely personalised, the examples below should give you a realistic starting point.

What affects the cost of a New Zealand holiday?

Several things influence the overall cost of your trip.

1. The time of year

The busiest and most expensive period is from mid December until early February, when New Zealanders are also on their summer holidays.

Accommodation books out early, flights are more expensive and availability can become limited. If your dates are flexible, I often recommend travelling in February or March.

The weather is usually beautiful, the days are still long, vineyards are in full swing, and the summer holiday crowds have gone home.

October and November are also lovely months to visit, with spring flowers, comfortable temperatures and generally excellent availability.

2. How long you're travelling

This is probably the biggest factor.

One of the most common mistakes I see is visitors trying to squeeze too much into two weeks.

New Zealand may look small on a map, but driving here is very different from driving in many other countries. Our roads are often winding, and you'll find yourself stopping constantly to admire the scenery or take photographs.

I always remind my clients that the journey is part of the holiday.

If you spend every day driving from one destination to the next, you'll miss what makes New Zealand so special.

3. Your style of travel

Every traveller is different.

Some people are happiest staying in boutique hotels.

Others would rather spend a little less on accommodation and include more activities.

Some love hiking and adventure.

Others prefer scenic cruises, wildlife encounters, food and wine experiences or simply relaxing in beautiful surroundings.

There isn't a right or wrong approach. The best holiday is the one that's designed around you.

Typical New Zealand holiday costs

The examples below reflect what many of my clients choose.

14-Day Customised Self-Drive Holiday

A realistic budget for a couple is approximately:

NZ$15,000 to NZ$20,000 per couple

This would typically include:

✔ Quality 4-star accommodation

✔ Rental car with full insurance

✔ Domestic flights where appropriate

✔ Breakfasts at most properties

✔ Carefully selected sightseeing and experiences

✔ A fully personalised itinerary

✔ Personal assistance before and during your holiday

21-Day Customised Self-Drive Holiday

For three weeks, I generally suggest budgeting:

NZ$21,000 to NZ$25,000 per couple

That extra week makes an enormous difference.

It allows a much more relaxed pace, fewer long driving days and time to properly enjoy destinations like Wānaka, Queenstown and Fiordland rather than simply passing through.

Many of my clients tell me afterwards that extending from two weeks to three was one of the best decisions they made.

Luxury New Zealand Holidays

If you're looking for luxury lodges, private guides, scenic helicopter flights, premium dining and exclusive experiences, budgets generally begin from:

NZ$30,000+ per couple

Luxury in New Zealand isn't simply about staying in beautiful accommodation.

  • It's waking up overlooking a glacier.

  • Enjoying dinner prepared by award-winning chefs.

  • Taking a private wine tour.

  • Watching whales from the air.

  • Or arriving at a remote lodge that's only accessible by helicopter.

Those are the experiences that people remember for years afterwards.

Where is it worth spending a little more?

People often ask me where I recommend increasing their budget.

I encourage people to invest in experiences.

  • A scenic cruise through Milford Sound.

  • The TranzAlpine train.

  • A guided food or wine tour.

  • A scenic helicopter flight.

  • A whale watching cruise in Kaikōura.

These are usually the highlights people talk about long after they've returned home.

I also recommend staying close to places like Aoraki / Mount Cook or Fiordland, so you can experience these incredible landscapes early in the morning or later in the evening when many day visitors have left.

Why I don't sell fixed itineraries

One of the things I enjoy most about my job is getting to know my clients.

  • Some are celebrating retirement.

  • Others are on their honeymoon.

  • Some are travelling with teenagers.

  • Others are travelling together as friends or ticking New Zealand off their bucket list after dreaming about it for years.

Every conversation is different.

That's why every itinerary I create starts with a conversation rather than a brochure.

I want to understand what excites you, how you like to travel and what memories you hope to take home. Only then do I begin designing your itinerary.

Jane's Tip

When clients ask me where they should spend a little extra, my answer is almost always the same: allow yourself more time rather than trying to fit more into your itinerary.

An extra night in the right place is often far more memorable than adding another destination. It gives you the chance to relax, explore at your own pace and enjoy those unexpected moments that often become the highlight of your holiday.

Thinking about visiting New Zealand?

If you're wondering what a customised New Zealand holiday might cost, I'd be delighted to help. Once I know your travel dates, interests, preferred style of accommodation and budget, I can suggest a route that suits you and provide a realistic estimate, with no obligation.

Every itinerary I create is individually designed, so whether you're planning a two-week adventure, a three-week journey, or a luxury holiday celebrating a special occasion, I'll help you make the most of your time in New Zealand.

I'd love to help you create a New Zealand holiday that's every bit as memorable as you've imagined.
