How Much Does a Custom Trip to New Zealand Cost?

New Zealand is a once-in-a-lifetime destination for many travellers — dramatic landscapes, world-class food and wine, rich Māori culture, and endless opportunities for adventure or relaxation. One of the first questions I’m asked by clients planning a trip is:
“How much does a custom New Zealand holiday actually cost?”
Because every journey I design is fully personalised, there’s no single answer. But to help you plan with confidence, here’s a guide based on recent itineraries I’ve created for couples and families.
What’s Included in a Tailor-Made Itinerary
When you book a customised trip through Amazing New Zealand Itineraries, you can expect:
Accommodation – boutique 4★ properties with breakfast where available (luxury lodge upgrades available)
Transport – Car rental with full insurance, or chauffeur-driven options
Excursions & activities – carefully selected to match your interests (scenic cruises, winery visits, glowworm caves, geothermal parks, cultural tours, and more)
Domestic travel – inter-island ferry crossings or internal flights
Meals – breakfasts plus some lunches/dinners included as part of excursions
Personal support – a fully personalised digital itinerary (with Google Maps links), plus 24/7 assistance while you travel
Indicative Package Pricing (per couple, NZD)
Every trip is customised, but here are some examples to guide your budgeting:
10 days self-drive: from $10,000–$13,000 per couple
14 days self-drive: from $14,000–$18,000 per couple
21 days self-drive: from $21,000–$27,000 per couple
For those who would prefer not to drive, a private driver/guide can be arranged for all or part of your journey. Allow approximately NZD $1,500 per day (shared across your group) in addition to the above.
What Affects the Cost?
Several factors influence the final price of your itinerary:
Season of travel – December through February is peak season; shoulder months like March or November are often slightly less.
Accommodation style – boutique 4★ is our base standard; luxury lodges or resorts will increase the budget.
Experiences chosen – scenic helicopter flights, private wine tours, or overnight cruises will add to the cost.
Trip length and pace – more destinations and faster travel generally cost more than a slower-paced holiday.
Why Custom Travel Is Worth the Investment
While group tours and standard packages may appear cheaper, a tailor-made journey offers so much more:
Flexibility to travel at your pace, with rest days built in
Stays in boutique properties full of character, not big chains
Hand-picked experiences that suit your interests (whether that’s hiking, culture, food, or simply scenery)
Peace of mind with local support and seamless logistics
In short: you’ll see more, stress less, and create memories that feel uniquely yours.

Ready to Plan Your New Zealand Adventure?
Every journey I create is as individual as the people taking it. If the above ballpark costs align with your budget, I’d love to design something special — created just for you.
